 | The Citadel of Carnival
The new building site for masked wagons, the Citadel complex, was inaugurated on December 15, 2001 according to the project by Francesco Tomassi. It is located in the north of the city, the wagons are inside hangar that can be visited by groups and individuals not only during the carnival period. In addition, this complex is also a center of culture and entertainment with open spaces usable all year round: the elliptical square bordered by the hangars themselves is an excellent location for concerts and various events; it was in fact used for the now traditional Gaber Festival dedicated to the homonymous artist and to numerous concerts and musicals worldwide for the whole summer period. Inside, instead, a museum and a guided tour on the history of the Viareggio carnival have been created.
On May 13, 2010, the City Council of Viareggio, in order to cover the expenses of the municipal budget for 2010, authorized the sale of the Carnival Citadel to a bank with concessive lease concession to the Carnival Foundation of Viareggio.
