Lucca
First a Ligurian settlement and then an Etruscan one, in 180 B.C. Lucca became a Roman colony. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Goths and during the sixth century became the capital of the Lombard Duchy of Tuscia. At the fall of the latter, it became the seat of the Marquisate of Tuscany.
In 1119 Lucca was established as a free commune, then transformed into a Podesteria, where the power was ruled by representatives of the new class of merchants, which was beginning to develop at that time. Next to the silk industry, there was also an intense banking activity, thanks to which Lucca became an important economic center at European level.
At the same time, being crossed by the Via Francigena, Lucca became a fundamental stage of the pilgrimage that brought the Christians of northern Europe to Rome.
Involved in the wars between Pisa and Florence and the struggle between Guelfi and Ghibellines, and dominated for some time by Uguccione della Faggiuola, Castruccio Castracani and the Guinigi family, Lucca became a republic in 1430 and maintained its independence until 1799.
In 1805, at the request of the senate of Lucca, Napoleon established the Principality of Lucca and Piombino, assigning it to his sister Elisa and her husband, Felice Baciocchi.
With the Congress of Vienna and the Restoration was created the Duchy of Lucca, attributed to the Bourbons of Parma. Maria Luisa di Borbone was succeeded by her son, Carlo Ludovico (1824), who reigned until 1847 when the duchy became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
In 1860 Lucca and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany were annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Le 5 Terre
The Cinque Terre is a rugged stretch of coast of the Riviera Ligure di Levante (Riviera spezzina) located in the territory of the province of La Spezia between Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero, where there are five villages or, as it was called in the past, lands, listed here from west to east: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore.
Since 1997 they have been part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with the following justification:
«The eastern Ligurian riviera of the Cinque Terre is a cultural landscape of exceptional value which represents the harmonious interaction established between man and nature to create a landscape of exceptional quality, which is a manifestation of a millenary traditional way of life and which continues to play a major socio-economic role in the life of society.»
Thanks to the geographical and human characteristics of the territory where they arise, the Cinque Terre are considered one of the most suggestive Italian coastal attractions, for their orographic context hilly naturally harsh and rugged, Sweetened by the construction of terraces or strips for cultivation, which descends towards the sea with steep slopes; in the points where the sea meanders serpentine into the earth rise the villages, articulated to follow the natural shape of the hills.
The work of man, over the centuries, has shaped the territory by building the famous terraces on the slopes to the sea, due to the particular agricultural technique aimed at exploiting as much as possible the land placed in steep slope that slopes towards the sea, has made it one of the most characteristic and fascinating landscapes of Liguria.
